Hi! This is Zoriana for Yappi Corporate. Today we are going to talk about education in the United States and Ukraine. Do you know the difference between these two systems? And can you easily talk about it in English? If not, this video is just for you!
First of all, let's talk about education system in the States.
Students go to elementary and secondary school with a total of 12 grades.
Secondary school consists of two programs: the first one is called “junior high school” and the second one is called “high school.” So after high school, after graduating from high school (in 12th grade), students may go on to college or university to get their higher education.
Besides, did you know that students in high school have their own names depending on the grade they attend. For example, they are “freshman”, “sophomore”, “junior” and “senior” accordingly to the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades. It typically takes 4 years after school to earn a bachelor’s degree so these names apply to students in universities and colleges as well.
A student who is attending a college or university to earn a bachelor’s degree is studying at the undergraduate level. You can either begin your studies in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree at a community college or a four-year university or college.
A “major” is a unique field of study in which your degree is focused. For example, you can have a major in Journalism.
One of the peculiarities of American higher education system is that you can change your major multiple times if you choose. In this way their system is really flexible.
The system of education in Ukraine extends right from pre-school to higher education as well.
The public educational system is free of charge and includes 11 years of obligatory schooling. So the first four years are elementary school and the following years are secondary school.
There is a wide variety of universities in Ukraine that provide both free and fee-paying education. Students who have high scores on their entrance exams don’t have to pay for education. But the ones who have lower scores have to pay tuition.
Now unlike American students those in Ukraine cannot choose their classes as the curriculum is predetermined on national and sometimes university level. Moreover, students in Ukraine go to the same classes with the same groupmates for all four or five years in their universities.
Besides, a Bachelor’s degree in Ukraine is sort of de facto and is not considered a full degree. Therefore most students in Ukraine study one more year to get their Master’s degree.
What's more, if a student at university in Ukraine fails one of their classes, they may be expelled from university at all. And then if they want to get their education, their degree they have to study again, and take all of the classes all over again, even those they passed successfully.
So these are some of the main differences and features of educational systems in the United States and Ukraine. If you know any other peculiarities please share them in your comments. So if you like the video please put thumbs up.
